Melanie Okasili-Henry - Counsellor.
Melanie is an Integrative Counsellor, which means that she is trained to work with what are considered the main theories of counselling, namely Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Gestalt, Existential and Transactional Analysis. She also works with the Transpersonal, which means working with the spiritual self, so it can be said that she works with her clients using an holistic approach, which includes mind, body and spirit.
Melanie has trained for five years and has successfully completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling.
Her role as your Counsellor in to develop a unique counselling relationship that both you and her build together which supports you and moves with you through your process. She may at times guide or challenge you to see certain things from a different perspective, while containing all that you are and all that you bring to the sessions in a trusting, safe and respectful way, so that you feel understood and valued for who you are.
Having studied the main counselling theories, Melanie is able to draw on these to suit the needs of each client. What one person responds to and resonates with will not be the same for another, as we are all individuals.
She works according to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy Code of Ethics and is working towards Individual BACP Accreditation.
So what happens when you first come to see Melanie?
In the first session, you are coming together to get a sense of one another. Are you able to work with one another? Are you able to meet as two individuals and take this journey? A journey that will involve trust and courage as you delve into your feelings and thoughts, and share them with Melanie.
Once you agree to work together, this is the beginning of your process, and the journey you will take together in this unique relationship of change and insight. Each session lasts for 50 minutes, this is where the work starts yet it does not end when you leave the room, for as you live your life, you live what you have understood, felt or experienced about you and your situation. So the work is an ongoing and continuous process.
Together, you set a contract outlining confidentiality and its limits, also the number of sessions, usually six to begin with, and then agree to review these and see where to go next. Counselling can be goal specific, and short or open ended, open ended counselling is more in-depth and calls for a long commitment from both of you. This is something that you explore in the first session and review regularly throughout the sessions.
